An annual event is the pilgrimage to the basilica in the center of Cartago, a city about 8 miles from Orosi. People make this pilgrimage from all over the country and even some come from Nicaragua. The event culminates after the penitent's wealk at the church plaza with music, fireworks, food, and general fiesta (party). Almost everyone from Orosi goes for this annual event, and our group from the language school went as well. Since I was slower, I decided to hop on a bus (sag wagon) before the BIG hill, and got off about 2 miles from the town. I did the rest of the walk with loads of people I didn't know, but it felt great - people greeting one another, families of all ages, and once again, I felt safer out on the street at night with strangers in Costa Rica, than I ever have anywhere in the US!
